A5 Insider’s Guide: Candice Simons
Like many who have found their way home to Detroit, Candice Simons is a serial entrepreneur making a big name for herself in the city.
When Candice Simons moved back to Detroit she started Brooklyn Outdoor, a certified women-owned business with satellite locations in New York, LA and Chicago. The company is an outdoor advertising firm that helps clients’ message shine on places like Cobo Center’s expansive digital outdoor sign. Simmons recently opened the Brooklyn Outdoor Loft in Eastern Market, a hidden gem with panoramic views of the city that’s perfect for any occasion. Candice shares her love for the city on J’Adore Detroit and we asked her to share her favorite places to eat, drink and play.
EAT // Alley Taco
As co-owner, I am a bit partial to Alley Taco – a California-style Mexican eatery. We have indoor and outdoor seating, an expanded menu, and extended late-night hours. Our five tacos for five dollars deal on Taco Tuesdays is a fan favorite.
DRINK // Café d’Mongo’s
For genuine Detroit nightlife and eccentricity, Café d’Mongo’s is hard to beat. The bar is one of the most authentic speakeasy-style places you’ll find. The interior is a mix of furniture that you might find in your grandmother’s house, a Detroit history museum and a dive bar (all in the best way possible). Drinks are affordable, try the ‘Detroit Brown’ and ‘1439 Griswold’ (apparently, Quentin Tarantino’s favorite drink). Enjoy live music on Fridays and Saturdays from the in-house band, Carl & Company.
PLAY // Eastern Market
I love to meander around and get lost in the sea of local Detroiters and visitors on the weekend! If it is nice, stretch your legs on the Dequindre Cut. It’s a two-mile urban greenway that links the East Riverfront to Eastern Market. Throughout the greenway you’ll spot graffiti art and the majority of the work is from our annual partnership effort with 1xRun: Murals in the Market.
EXPERIENCE // The DIA
One of my favorite ways to experience Detroit is to get lost at the DIA. Grab coffee or snacks at Kresge Court and explore.
Detroit captured my heart five years ago and hasn’t let go of it. There is so much beauty in the unexpected twists and turns of the city. We only have to continue to grow and conquer, it takes an army but Detroit has it.
