A5 Insider’s Guide: Jena Irene Asciutto

American Idol alum, Jena Irene Asciutto, made national headlines but remains a hometown girl.

This summer Jena Irene Asciutto released her debut album, ‘Cold Fame’ with songs that tell the story of her time on the hit reality show and her homecoming to Detroit after it was over. Although she was courted by major record labels, Jena signed with local independent Original 1265 Recordings and is working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Songwriting at the Detroit Institute of Music Education (the school is located in Capitol Park and offers online courses). Jena has found inspiration in Detroit and we asked her to share her favorite places to eat, drink and play in the city to find inspiration of our own.

EAT // Slows BBQ

My favorite place to eat in Detroit is Slows BBQ, it’s famous for a reason!

DRINK // Magic Stick

The first concert I went there to see was ‘Boombox’ and I’ve been in love with the venue ever since!  I’m not a big drinker (although I am into stouts lately) but there’s always dope music to enjoy.

PLAY // Detroit Clothing Circle

This is one of my favorite places in Detroit. It’s an awesome vintage clothing boutique that ALWAYS has good options! I find great stuff in the women’s section and even in the men’s section. I love this place because of their support for other local clothing artists, and they always keep the standard at the cream of the crop! The location is great, and the building is even cooler 🙂

EXPERIENCE // Cliff Bell’s

There are so many wonderful musicians that play at the jazz bar and the ambiance is like no other. It feels like you’re back in the roaring 20’s, the environment is so original.

I want everyone to experience the color and new opportunity when they visit Detroit, the possibilities are endless and it’s just the beginning of a crazy revolution!
