THE WATSON TWINS & TIM FITE at the Pike Room
Los Angeles-based folk-rock band THE WATSON TWINS isn't one of those groups that is being cheeky with its name. The duo comprises Chandra and Leigh Watson, who are actual identical twins. You might know them best from backing up Jenny Lewis a couple of years back on Rabbit Fur Coat and their debut, 2006's self-released Southern Manners. The retro-folk sound of the Watson Twins should fit right in on Vanguard, a label steeped in traditional music, who will release their latest, FIRE SONGS. With TIM FITE: "A lo-fi lone wolf from Brooklyn, Tim Fite is somewhere between folk and hip-hop, and with his latest album " a harsh indictment of consumerism and the American dream of selling out " he has made himself into a cultural gadfly," says the New York Times. Fite's latest, Fair Ain't Fair is a collection of the most seasoned, reflective and charming work Tim Fite has ever produced. On it, he explores the idea of apocalypse - the title itself is a reference to the sad reality of having to live with reaping what we sow - but also the redemptive essence of an apology. A year in the making, the sounds on the record are equally as big and ambitious as the topics it contains. Drums tracked overnight at Fite's old high school drive many of the songs. On top of the propulsive beats, Fite sprinkles his signature samples, but with a more restrained hand, and these bits of musical flotsam become more a part of the whole than a sum of disparate parts. "Big Mistake" is the perhaps the most straightforwardly catchy song Fite has ever penned, in spite of a touch of his pervasive self-effacement, and on "Trouble," Fite growls about greed and avarice, topics manifest in last year's Over The Counter Culture, but told here with more empathy, more human-ness - perhaps signs of a deeply engaged artist growing up.

MISSY HIGGINS at The Crofoot Ballroom
In a world littered with disposable pop Missy Higgins is a welcome relief.. passionate, sincere and proudly Australian. The 23 year old singer/songwriter from Melbourne has enjoyed phenomenal success in her homeland in spite - or perhaps because - of shunning the usual synthetic packaging and tabloid tackiness. Instead she's adopted a more timeless approach, relying on her undeniable songs and unforgettable live performances to build a genuine and gimmick free connection with her audience. Missy's new album, "On A Clear Night", retains the hallmarks of her earlier work - irresistible melodies and 'arrow through the heart' lyrics delivered by a voice that clearly means it. However, this time around the tracks benefit from the empathetic production of Mitchell Froom who helmed the first three Crowded House albums as well as works by other quality artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and the Finn Brothers. The new album also showcases the changing world view of a more self assured artist. There's a quiet strength to these new works which suggests a more confident young woman. She's grown up in public and "On A Clear Night" is the diary she's kept along the way.
