How many times has a friend tapped you on the shoulder to say, 'Hey, check out that girl over there. She's smoking hot!' There is only one problem, she has a friend.
This is where you come into play, the wingman.
Who doesn't remember the classic scene in the film Starsky and Hutch that leaves Owen Wilson (Hutch) and Ben Stiller (Starsky) debating in the kitchen which girl each of them will take?
Hutch: "Hey, which one do you want?"
Starsky: "I really prefer blondes."
Hutch: "Good, cause I'll take anything."
If only it were always that easy!
The role of a wingman can have great rewards (i.e. hooking up with a gorgeous girl) or it can be one of those moments you wish you could pretend never happened. Regardless, whenever we find ourselves in this position there seems to be a set of unwritten rules that one must abide by when playing Goose to his Maverick.
1. When asked by a buddy to be the wingman you must accept, don't be that guy who lets down a friend. Just remember that when the time comes and you need a wingman, he owes you.
2. You must take the other girl, no matter what she looks or acts like. You have to take one for the team!
3. The two of you must buy the lucky ladies a drink and try to hype up your buddy as best you can, without sounding too cheesy or tacky. This will be an even easier task if your friend springs for the cocktails.
4. Sometimes you have to be a distraction. Take your girl to the bar for a drink or to the dance floor so your amigo can work his magic.
5. In a group setting, make sure you keep the ladies talking and try to sound like you are remotely interested in what they're saying. A great conversation can have amazing results!
6. If your buddy can seal the deal, you may have to drive the 'wing-girl' home, rather than sharing stories over 2:00 a.m. pancakes with your best friend.
7. Be cautious! When having a conversation with the girl and you realize you are in no way interested in her, try not to lead her on. Remember that you are supporting your friend. This will be best for everyone, as you don't need some girl calling you next week trying to finagle a double date.
8. You, as the wingman, cannot attempt to sabotage or steal the girl your buddy is attempting to attract. That's just a low blow and will not look good among the other guys. With this behavior, don't be surprised if you're not asked to the bar anymore!
