Find Your Staples
With every reemergence of spring, the forecasting of trends for the upcoming seasons can trigger a reexamination of your wardrobe, and the moment can come where you realize you just have nothing to wear.
This dilemma can be more problematic for men than women, women are typically more in tune to trends, and lets face it, they desire to be fashionable, where men could live in blue jeans and a couple shirts if it were socially acceptable.
What's a guy to do? It is not logical to throw away every piece in your wardrobe simply because it is outdated or doesn't fit. But what if a trip to the mall is critical for an overdue update of spring/summer attire? What goes, what stays, and what should the first pieces in building a new wardrobe be?
Not every man is a metrosexual, and shopping can be as difficult a test as the SATs for some, so After 5 Detroit, with the assistance of Unclutter.com hopes to help guide you towards the building blocks for a basic wardrobe. Consider this a "big picture" look at building a basic wardrobe; climates, social and professional demands, and fashion preferences weigh into the differing needs of an individual.
Every wardrobe must have professional/formal attire, these pieces you will likely have already, but if you need an update or want to relieve an over stuffed closet every man should own:
A navy blue suit in a four-season wool fabric.
A charcoal grey suit in a four-season wool fabric.
A small collection of silk ties (the number varies with how many days in a year you wear them). Your collection should contain at least a solid color tie and a striped tie that work with both of your basic suits
Three white long-sleeve dress shirts and at least one light blue long-sleeve dress shirt. If you work in a corporate environment, you'll need more than this to make it through the week (less than 15 total, however). If you work in a casual environment or from home, these four longsleeve dress shirts will very likely suffice.
When shopping for casual attire, trends and style preferences are the most confusing for the fashion illiterate. But, most men have an image they want to project as if they are mall-store mannequins come to life.
Stylish and Efficient
Either way, whatever your fashion knowledge, every man's closet should contain these casual staples:
One short-sleeve knit polo shirt.
A heavy sweater in a solid color. Black and solid grey v-neck sweaters always seem to be in style.
A cotton-blend front-zip jacket, like a hoodie or warm-up to wear with jeans or khakis.
Two to four pair of jeans.
Three to five additional shirts that are appropriate to your social schedule. If you're a t-shirt and jeans guy, let these shirts reflect this.
Two pair of dress khakis and a pair of khaki shorts.
A set of athletic pants and a t-shirt you wouldn't mind if paint were spilled on it.
Seven white undershirts and 14 pair of underwear.
Pajamas.
A swimsuit.
Following these tips, you can be sure to have a wardrobe with options for any occasion, as well as keeping the clutter down. A closet is like a stomach, no good can come from over-stuffing either, be as conscious of what you put in your closet as you do your belly.
