Beware of Staking Your Claim
We have all been through it. The excitement of a first date. The anticipation of a phone call. The ups, the downs. The heartaches and heartbreaks.

As a way to deal with the rollercoasters of relationships, we thought we would share some pearls of wisdom, sorrow, joy, frustration, bliss and all the other million emotions that run through us when dealing with romance (and sometimes the lack thereof).

Each week we'll feature a new tale, experience or piece of advice and we want to hear from you. E-mail us your stories, questions and more!

So here you are, please enjoy "Dating in the D".

There's No Calling Shotgun in Dating!

One of the most tragic mistakes people make in the world of 'pick ups' is what we like to call the 'not it' or 'shotgun' rule.

How many times have you been at a bar with your best friend when suddenly two prospects begin to approach like lions prowling towards a wildebeest? You quickly deduce the situation and shout out before your friend can put down her martini, "I call the blonde." This mere utterance can prove to be fatal.

Let us explain. First of all you're being a bad friend! What if your friend is the blonde's soulmate? And just because you thought he was cute, you marked your territory and prevented them from ever connecting.

Secondly, you are more likely to wow these potential suitors as a duo, more so than on your own. You'll play off each other, strike up some witty banter and share hilarious anecdotes. They'll not only be amused they'll be so positively riveted by your "This one time in Cancun" stories that they won't leave your side all night.

Thirdly, it will give you and your friend an amazing inside look into who these suitors really are. How do they interact with each other? Is one of them a complete dud? Are they a dynamic duo just like the two of you? You'll quickly be able to discover who has potential and who doesn't. And chances are it'll either be both or neither.

Finally, haven't you learned anything from the Discovery Channel? The one that gets separated from the herd is always the one that ends up as the lion's dinner. Don't ruin your night by getting trapped in a one on one with a guy who keeps reminding you that he has a pool and it's always 85 degrees. Your friend's not going to save you, for the mere fact that you called 'shotgun' first.

So sit back, relax and do the driving together- we promise you'll have a much better night if you do!
