Can You Make a Myspace Connection?
Let's face it, we're busy people. We used to have the time to go to the bars and get new numbers for dates we'd go on the following week, but lately it's getting harder and harder to find the time. However, the Internet has brought the proverbial bar scene to our computer screens. And Myspace is the kingpin.
Unless you've been living under a rock, you know what Myspace is and more than likely you've succumbed to peer pressure and posted your own profile. It's become super-easy to find old friends; I know I've pretty much found everyone I've ever known on Myspace. And one of the great things about Myspace is the ease of meeting new people. Sure, you get plenty of indie bands and people just trying to befriend you to add to their lists, but every once in a while you come across someone who's actually worth talking to.
At these beginning stages of your new Myspace relationship you'll be doing some messaging back and forth, getting to know one another. You can also post bulletins with those surveys for everyone on your friends list to read, which can also be a nice insight into who you are and vice versa.
That brings me to another point: your top friends list. This list of 8-16 friends will be the first ones people see when they come across your profile. You can put them in any order you want and you might even create a little drama when someone thinks they should be your top friend and you have them as number 4. Anyway, as your Myspace relationship blossoms, it's a good sign when they put you in their top list and the act should be mutual if the feelings are.
Eventually you'll want to take this friendship away from the keyboard. Text messaging on your cell phone makes an easy transition from the computer to real life and then phone chats, of course. It's nice when you can finally put a voice to the profile pics. By this time you've become more than just online friends, and meeting for lunch or coffee is an easy and pressure free way to meet in person.
Once you've checked out your new friend in person, it's all up to you. Whether you begin dating or just add a new friend to hang out with on Friday nights, Myspace made it easy to take that first step toward broadening your social horizons.
