No Time Like the Present!
Ok, we know that you've been busy with the new job, new schedule, new apartment and so forth, but what about making sure that all your needs are being met? When was the last time you went to the gym, went for a run or checked that your refrigerator wasn't full of mold and junk food? If you're struggling to come up with a recent date for any of those questions, it's time you kicked yourself back into shape.
While the thought of revising your life plan one more time may seem daunting, there are plenty of avenues out there to help with the details. More than likely, you pass by a gym or fitness center on your way to or from work. Choosing a place that you are already in the vicinity of for other reasons can be a motivator for going and not skipping workouts. Before you go whining that a gym costs money and you don't have any, check your health care plan. Many plans (like SOLO from HAP) have a program where you are eligible for discounts at area health clubs and the like. For example, if you are a SOLO member, the HAP Advantage program has a component called GlobalFit where you can find a gym close to you that will let you join for a discounted rate. You can also get a guest pass to try the gym before you commit.
Many of us have also fallen victim over the years to the infomercial craze and we're willing to bet there is some sort of exercise gadget collecting dust in your place. Whether it is an ab machine, treadmill, weight system or step, get it out of its hiding place and put it to some good use. Don't have those materials close by? We bet there is a store near you that does and they aren't expensive. An effective home gym will consist of a few key pieces such as a stability ball, jump rope, resistance bands or tubing, and a set of dumbbells for starters. Make sure the dumbbells are heavy enough to provide resistance with your repetitions but not too tough to lift out of the store! These items can be used for cardio and strength training of multiple muscle groups and work in small spaces.
Think about it, starting now makes sense. The holidays are over, you aren't likely to get caught in that resolution curse where you fail in the first few weeks and the rest of your life is in full swing. What are you waiting for? There is no time like the present to get out of a rut and into a healthier lifestyle.
