You Never Know What You'll Find
Everything in a garage sale has potential. It just depends on how you use it. You might think that some items are useless crap, but a little imagination and some tweaking can make all the difference.
Small items can make a big impact. The key to garage sale shopping is to not overlook any items that may be an addition to your home decor. Fishing line, a collection of craft beads and even remnants of old wallpaper, if used properly, can all be utilized in subtle ways to add to your decor.
String beads onto the fishing line and sew them around pillows to add glamour. Use decorative squares of wallpaper as placemats to dress up your dining table.
Don't overlook a tired looking sofa. Update it by upholstering it with new fabric or buying a slipcover. Enhance the sofa with new pillows to add personality. Upholstering or covering will keep the dollars in your pocket and add pizzazz to an old couch.
Don't like the look of an outdated bedroom furniture set? Use only the pieces that can be salvaged and spice them up. Adding white paint and molding to a headboard can get you closer to having that shabby-chic look. Staining and changing the hardware can give a run-down nightstand a whole new look. Throw a woven rug on a trunk and turn it into seating.
You might think that the 80's clothes sold at garage sales are not even worth looking at. Think again. Different fabrics are great for scrap booking, edging towels and covering pillows. You can even frame an interesting piece of fabric and hang it up as artwork.
Learning some creative paint finishes will be a great skill to have when wanting to give something a whole new look. Using patina on a shiny brass picture frame will give it that classic antique appearance.
Stack up old books or cigar boxes to use as side tables or base of a lamp. These little touches will add character to any room.
The key to garage sale finds is keeping your eyes open for things that can be upgraded or used differently. Even if you do not know what to do with an item that catches your eye, buy it anyway and figure out what to do with it later.
Don't forget to bargain for your knickknacks in to get the best value.
