Behind the Scenes @ GATHER with Jessi Patuano

Behind the Scenes @ GATHER with Jessi Patuano

Gather is back at Eastern Market with a new chef but the same vibe.

It’s the big city-small town community that attracted New York native, Jessi Patuano, to Detroit and it’s the atmosphere she is looking to foster as the new head chef at Gather. With communal seating in an intimate space (34 seats inside and another 10 on the patio in warmer weather), guests are encouraged to mix and mingle.

I love bringing people together with food and the concept of breaking bread with someone you don’t know. This environment fosters new conversations and exposes people to something that might not otherwise experience.

At home with friends is the feeling Jessi wants guests to have and the menu was created with that in mind. Expect casual dining with elevated comfort foods that are familiar but not something you’d make at home. The small plates are meant to be shared and affordable.

The economy of guests isn’t the only one in mind at Gather, the restaurant also seeks to support the local urban farm community and offers a seasonal menu guided by what is being produced by local farmers. It’s an increasingly popular trend in the Detroit food scene.

The urban farm scene is booming. The restaurateurs are seeing their opportunity to help that side of the food industry as well. It’s refreshing to see that this is an inclusive community where people aren’t competing but trying to raise each other up – you don’t get that in other cities.”

After closing in the summer to find its new chef, Gather, re-opens Friday, October 13th.

STRAIGHT FROM THE CHEF

jessi’s favorite: terrine sandwich – inspired by her love for charcuterie, it has a lot of flavor and a lot of surprises.

  • The chorizo empanada take a lot of effort to make but it’s worth it
  • Bahn Mi porkbelly sandwich is solid, it’s Veitnamese-styled with an American twist
  • The bar offers a whiskey and apple cider slushy that is awesome
