Castalia Set to Open in Midtown

During the day it’s Sfumato, a fragrance shop for men and women, but after hours the underground hideaway becomes Castalia – Midtown’s new cocktail bar.

If you don’t know it’s there, you’d probably miss it (so consider yourself a Detroit insider). Castalia is Midtown’s new hidden gem. The fragrance shop/cocktail bar is located below the street level of an old Victorian house on the corner of Second and Alexandrine. The converted basement took over a year to complete and it is stunning. The compact shop is a retail store during the day and at night it transforms into a scented cocktail bar that tests your senses of taste and smell in unique ways.

It’s an unexpected combination but perfume cocktail bars are becoming popular across the globe, and owners (and husband-wife team) Kevin Peterson and Jane Larson are leading the way in Detroit. Peterson combined his culinary training with his hobby of developing unique scents to create Sfumato in 2014. The fragrance company’s scents have been creatively re-imagined for Castalia’s cocktail menu. We recommend you try the Gravitas, a new take on an Old Fashion with caramelized sugar, coriander, cardamom, nutmeg, bitters and orange zest.

Castalia officially opens March 21st but you can preview the space and the cocktails at special ticketed events this week.
