Detroit Design 139: A look at Detroit’s future

Detroit Design 139 (DD139) brings together 38 development projects from across the city to showcase the future of Detroit and its innovative use of design to re-purpose and rebuilt. The City of Detroit, Bedrock and the partners behind DD139, carefully selected projects that reflect 10 guiding principles deemed essential to building a community that benefits all Detroiters. The principles range from advancing design as a means to improve the quality-of-life for all people to celebrating Detroit’s design legacy, while contributing to its design future.

The exhibit reflects a shift in thinking and planning for the future of Detroit. The city has made progress in improving its basic infrastructure and now has the capacity to strategically plan for development. The exhibit’s curators expect innovative, contemporary design to take a prominent role in discussion and planning as they cultivate local and international architectural talent to drive economic development in the city.

The general public is invited to visit 1001 Woodward throughout the month of September to explore the exhibit. City residents who are unable to travel downtown will have the opportunity to view the information shared in the exhibit at the Joseph Walker Williams Center, Northwest Activities Center and the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation.

Detroit Design 139 plans to relaunch the exhibit bi-annually to provide project updates and showcase new plans for Detroit in order to stimulate community conversation and cultivate an appreciation for the importance of innovative design in city planning.

We want to make Detroit an architectural mecca and the next great American City of the 22nd century.

– Melissa Dittmer, Vice President of Architecture + Design at Bedrock
