Cultural ambassadors to the world! Beloved by Detroit audiences, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brings four performances of its masterful artistry and expansive repertory, including their signature work Revelations, to the Detroit Opera House. Be inspired and experience some of the best-loved work by the man who forever changed the face of modern dance.
The program’s featured works include “r-Evolution, Dream,”inspired by sermons and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and “Masekela Langage,” which draws parallels to the end of South African apartheid and Chicago’s race riots during the 1960s – a work especially relevant as Detroit recognizes the 50th anniversary of its own race riots.
The performances will also honor jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie during the year of their birth centennial. The company, recognized by U.S. Congress as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World,” is known for celebrating the African-American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition.
