POP + OFFWORLD TAKES YOU BACK TO THE 80s

POP + OFFWORLD is the latest restaurant venture of business partners Dave Gregory and Tim Tharp. The restaurant and entertainment venue is located on the second floor of Checker Bar, and continues the duo’s tradition of highlighting Detroit’s past. This time the 1980s.

The vintage arcade and pizzeria has over 30 arcade games (including three pinball machines) and live guest DJs spinning vinyl. With 25 cent games, a fully-stocked bar and pizza toppings only a teenager would think of, you won’t want to leave.

The restaurant spent months perfecting its pizza recipes and it worked! Our favorite is the Napalm Breath – fresh garlic, cheez blend, Feta, yellow peppers, white onion, garlic aioli and fried garlic. Order by the slice or by the pie, you won’t regret either.

Since 2014, Offworld Arcade has set up shop in various pop-up locations across the city. POP will offer the first permanent home to old-school classics like QBert, Mrs. PacMan, The Simpsons and Mortal Kombat and brand-new arcade games, including 2017 release SkyCurser.

Gregory and Tharp bought Checker Bar three years ago and made necessary upgrades to the building but made sure to preserve the character and history of the legendary 1950s burger bar. Their first venture, Grand Trunk Pub, is located on Woodward south of Campus Martius, and highlights its early Detroit origins as a jewelry store, train ticket station, and Irish Pub. The Whiskey Parlor found on Grand Trunk’s second floor includes reminders of its past life as a speakeasy.

POP + OFFWORLD opens to the public Friday, September 8th and will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m..
