A5 Insider’s Guide: Ian Conyers

State Senator Ian Conyers’ is carrying on his family legacy of public service in Detroit.

Elected at age 28, Ian Conyers is the youngest member to serve in the Michigan legislature. He’s young, energetic and ready to tackle the challenges and propel the successes of Detroit and the state. Public service is a role Conyers feels comfortable in, his great-uncle is the Dean of the U.S. House of Representatives, John Conyers. The Conyers family has been in Detroit for nearly 100 years and we wanted to know Ian’s favorite places to eat, drink and play in the city.

EAT // London Chop House (Downtown)

The character at the London Chop House brings back classic Detroit – once the live jazz starts it’s nearly impossible to leave. I get the lamb chops served medium and can’t stop thinking about them.

DRINK // The Standby (Downtown)

I get the Snake in the Grass but you can’t go wrong with the spirit selection – their mixologists are the best in town. The combination of art, music and good people is hard to beat and – even better – they are open late!

PLAY // Palmer Park

I’m a huge fan of a bike ride or long walk through Palmer Park. There are so many great things there – pond trails, a horse carriage, art fairs and Tai Chi classes.

EXPERIENCE // West Grand Boulevard

The Boulevard has it all; including the legendary Hitsville and the glorious architecture of the Fisher Building. I’m very excited to see the progress and development in this historic thoroughfare.

Detroit is the original engine of change – as one of the first places where people from all over the country and world came to design and build innovative products, sounds, and ideas. Today we are on the verge of living our legacy in this city again and I look forward to all of us enjoying it together!
