Chili Mustard Onions Brings Vegan Coneys to Brush Park

Chili Mustard Onions Brings Vegan Coneys to Brush Park

Detroit vegetarians and vegans can finally get in on one of the city’s most prized dishes–the coney dog–with the opening of Chili Mustard Onions, CMO, a vegan coney island new to Brush Park.

Owner and chef Pete LaCombe worked long and hard to transform the new diner. After some bumps in the road and an incredible renovation (check out the pictures on their Facebook page), CMO is open for business. The restaurant seats around 30 people but it’s been standing room only since it opened last week. The long anticipated opening is already popular and CMO ran out of food more than once since it’s opened.

It’s a testament to their unique menu that offers those with dietary restrictions the opportunity to enjoy some well known fast food items, like the McDonalds Big Mac – or as it’s known at CMO, the “Big Mock”. Other dishes include vegan takes on gyros, burgers, coneys, soft serve ice cream, and more.

LaCombe, his wife, and his daughter are behind the venture. LaCombe has been cooking and trying to recreate vegan versions of different meals for years and based on the early reviews he’s been wildly successful.
