Art Museum Day at the DIA

The Detroit Institute of Arts will offer free admission and discounted memberships for all visitors on Thursday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors’ annual Art Museum Day.

The theme of this year’s Art Museum Day is “Art Museums Foster Vibrant Communities.” AAMD members across the U.S., Canada and Mexico will be offering programs and initiatives to celebrate the arts and the important role art museums play in their communities.

DIA visitors can browse the collection; admire student talent in the 80th annual “Detroit Public Schools Community District Student Exhibition”; see “Thalassa,” the impressive sculpture by New York street artist Caledonia “Callie” Curry, known as Swoon, that soars above the Woodward Ave. lobby; and take a docent-led tour of the collection at 1 p.m. Stop by a DIA admissions desk to purchase a Senior, Companion, Family Plus or Affiliate membership for 20 percent off.
