GREEN SNEAKERS & Echoes of the Depression

Chamber Music at the Scarab Club concludes its 21st season with another exciting collaboration with the Michigan Opera Theatre. The May 5th concert is presented in advance of MOT’s production of Ricky Ian Gordon’s opera, The Grapes of Wrath, based on the classic novel by John Steinbeck. The main work on the program is Green Sneakers, a 60 minute chamber opera, also by Ricky Ian Gordon, who wrote the poetry as well as the music for this very personal and moving work. Scored for baritone and string quartet, CMSC welcomes back the marvelous baritone, John Daugherty, to perform this challenging work, along with violinists Laura Roelofs and Velda Kelly, violist Scott Stefanko and cellist Nadine Deleury. The program begins with two works by African American composers, both of whom began their long careers during the Depression era. The string quartet will perform a beautiful movement from Florence Price’s String Quartet in G Major, composed in 1929 and the lively Danzas de Panama by William Grant Still, based on Panamanian folk tunes collected by Elizabeth Waldo in the 1920s.

As always, each piece will be introduced by one of the musicians and the concert will be followed by a delicious and friendly reception.
