Thursdays at the Museum: To Have and Have Not

Screenwriters William Faulkner and Jules Furthman brought Hemmingway’s World War II adventure novel to the screen with scene after scene of now-legendary dialogue. Humphrey Bogart stars as a cynical skipper-for-hire who reluctantly agrees to transport a French Resistance leader and his wife to Martinique. The screen debut of Lauren Bacall (“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?”) remains a superlative example of golden-age Hollywood craftsmanship. (100 min.)

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. the Detroit Institute of Arts offers programs for adults 55+. For more information on Thursdays at the Museum, call 313.833.4005.
