n a rare special event, the Rackham Choir will perform composer Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, a powerful oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra, accompanying a screening of Carl Th. Dreyer’s majestic silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. Born in 1412, Joan of Arc was an illiterate young woman who led a French army against English occupation, was eventually martyred and canonized a saint. She claimed to be guided by divine voices—a core element in Einhorn’s piece.

The score is built around texts by women writers of the Middle Ages, and brings to it both his research in medieval chant and his appreciation of compositional minimalism. The libretto is a montage of Latin and ancient French writings, and is presented with English subtitles.
