FRANK LANZKRON-TAMARAZO, CHAZZANO COFFEE

Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo of Ferndale’s Chazzano Coffee started his coffee business out of his garage in New Jersey in 2002 from a desire to create the perfect cup of coffee.

He and his wife have always been foodies and they would spend their free time dining at the best restaurants. They would always end their meals with coffee and each time they did so, their entire experience would be tainted because the coffee served just never hit the spot.

“My original goal for Chazzano Coffee Roasters was a selfish one,” Lanzkron-Tamarazo said. “I just wanted to make sure that our favorite restaurants with great food and service would have a fantastic cup of coffee available.”

Lanzkron-Tamarazo started with a few pounds of coffee in his garage and soon found himself with thousands of pounds of green, unroasted coffee from 20 different countries. He moved from New Jersey to Chicago and then on to Farmington Hills.

Now, he roasts his coffee inside of the small Ferndale cafe, where customers are able to sit and watch the process while enjoying the masterpiece. Chazzano Coffee Roasters has been open in Ferndale since October 2009 and they’ve been voted Best Coffee Shop in Detroit for the past five years by Click on Detroit.

“I chose Ferndale because it has always been an exciting town filled with food and beverage loving entrepreneurs and small business owners who care about one another,” said Lanzkron-Tamarazo.

Lanzkron-Tamarazo grew up in New York City and he found Ferndale to be similar, with its melting pot of different people and experiences.

Lanzkron-Tamarazo’s latest project is his own kind of coffee soda. As a kid, Lanzkron-Tamarazo’s Italian grandmother would always ask him to bring cases of a New York brand coffee soda to their weekly Sunday dinners.

“This soda was always available on our dinner table and it was a big part of my childhood,” he said. “However, like most sodas, it had lots of sugar, molasses, additives, and preservatives.”

When Lanzkron-Tamarazo created Chazzano Coffee Roasters, he dreamt of brewing his own coffee soda but a kind that was more health conscious.

“So, with the assistance of my roasting manager, Austin, a home beer brewer, we began to experiment with ways of carbonating Chazzano Coffee,” he said. “The idea of a coffee soda was Brooklyn born, therefore, the name became Brooklyn Born Coffee Soda. This coffee soda has great head retention like a beer with a chocolaty finish and a rich mouthfeel.”

Lanzkron-Tamarazo also brews a Cascara coffee soda, called Fruit of the Bean Cascara Soda, born out of his relationship with Gold Mountain Coffee Growers out of Nicaragua.

Both of these sodas are sold now in limited quantities to 8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale and Detroit, Michigan Beer Growlers Company in Beverly Hills and The Bosco in Ferndale.

Chazzano Coffee and their team don’t believe in adding cream or sugar to their coffee because it’s so complex and freshly roasted. The cafe doesn’t carry food either because Lanzkron-Tamarazo wants customers to be enriched by an awesome, quality cup of coffee.

“For the same reasons, our sodas will never have sugar, additives or preservatives,” he said.

Chazzano Coffee has over 15 different ways of brewing, including French press, pour over, Turkish, cold brew, espresso, jebena (for Ethiopian coffee), moka pot and iced. If you’re a serious coffee drinker and you’re daring enough to drink coffee for 1.5 hours, Chazzano Coffee offers a drinking for the cycle method where you’re able to taste one single origin coffee in five different brewing methods- French press, iced, vacuum syphon, espresso, pour over and Turkish.

The bestselling coffee by the pound at Chazzano Coffee is their Ethiopia Harrar, a coffee with notes of blueberry and cherry, in addition to pipe tobacco with a red wine finish.

If that’s not enough for you, Chazzano Coffee also sources 15 different loose leaf teas each month from Zen Tea Traders.

Chazzano Coffee is also a community oriented business and after three weeks on the shelf, the coffee is donated to low income housing and homeless shelters.
