Three like minded individuals with the desire to create a community gathering space decided to leave their corporate jobs and start where comfort begins – in the kitchen. Gather Detroit opened in Eastern Market earlier this week.

Nate Vogeli and Kyle and Lea Hunt decided to open Gather Detroit in October 2015 by way of pop-up dinners, and after months of searching for the right place to call home, they landed on a spot in Eastern Market.

“We love good food, serving people, and being involved in the community and wanted to put these passions into practice,” Kyle said.

Vogeli, the chef and part owner, has occupied all roles in the kitchen from line cook to head chef and he’s done so all over the country. Lea and Kyle, part owners of Gather, have been married for three years and from the start of their relationship the two wanted to open their own business.

The Gather menu includes dishes like Bread, Pork + Rice, Mussels, Charred Wings and Skirt Steak, in addition to no nonsense and fresh plates like their Pasta, made with grilled market veggies, lemon, butter and cream, and their beef Burger, made with onion, tomato, lettuce and creamy malt vinegar.

The lighter portion of the menu offers a Caesar Salad, butter garlic veggies and Eggplant, made with herbs and feta.

The drink menu offers over 15 beverages, including the Cool Hand Cuke, made with gin, cucumber, mint and lime for $6. You can also go simple and order a Miller High Life for $3 or you can cool off with their Hooray Rosé–which is their rosé slushie–for $5.

Gather Detroit aims to dish out good, honest food. The three owners all come from blue collar backgrounds and part of their business plan is to make guests feel welcome and have guests linger to mingle with old and new friends. The menu will be entirely cooked over hardwoods and fruitwoods from the surrounding area and the team hopes it brings back memories of campfire times and simpler days.

“The menu will be very focused on the season and what the farmers can provide us,” Kyle said. “We like to call it ‘Eastern Market to table’.  We will have large format items you can share with friends or family and will also feature a good burger for the guest who comes in for a party of one.”

“We are lucky to call ‘home’ a place where quality farmers come with their best produce and you can shake hands and meet the people growing your food,” Kyle said. “To us this is everything.”
