It’s part deli, part cafe and all parts delicious, and it goes by the name La Pecora Nera. Downtown has gained a new gem, whose deli and cafe name translates to “the black sheep.”

Co-owner David Ayyash, who also owns Chickpea in the D, noticed that in this surge of Downtown Detroit dining, there weren’t too many places where you could make a quick stop to eat lunch and also leave with dinner and fresh produce. He and co-owner Zach Kostegian had been looking to open something new, and it all just clicked.

La Pecora Nera offers Italian food with a bit of a flare and they make most of their food in-house, with options like biscotti, coleslaw, deli sandwiches, salads and dinner specials.

They also serve gelato at La Pecora Nera, like vanilla bean, chocolate sea salt and pistachio. They also offer a fourth gelato flavor, which is seasonal.

Their coffee is specially made by Ashe Supply Co., a coffee shop on Broadway Street. La Pecora Nera’s coffee and tea menu includes cappuccinos, lattes, coffee and loose leaf tea, all made by way of a French press or pour over method. They also have espresso on the menu. You can order different baked goods too, like muffins and brownies, to go with your caffeine fix.

You can order deli meat by the pound, in addition to fresh produce and breads. They also offer their homemade croutons for takeaway so that you can add it to your salad at home, if you’d like to add a special touch. Sandwich options include the Hamboni, a ham and bacon sandwich with kettle cooked chips on top, and the Rueben Italiano, made with Sy Ginsberg corned beef, red cabbage slaw, shredded mozzarella and homemade thousand island dressing.

It’s designed to feel like a neighborhood hub, where people can stop in for 10 minutes to grab something quick or sit down with a coffee and stay for a couple hours, Ayyash said. For variety, they have seating inside and outside, with a covered patio so that it’s a bit more accessible throughout the seasons, Ayyash said.

Soon, La Percora Nera will add to their dinner specials, which already includes eggplant parmesan and mushroom risotto. Their grocery section will also be stocked with more items to cook at home and grab for the table.
