Takoi, formerly known as Katoi, reopens on Monday, August 28, after a suspected arson that devastated the Detroit hospitality community and those who follow it diligently. After a few months of hard teamwork, Takoi is here with a changed name and a extended, more secure space, and they’re back and better than ever with Thai-inspired dishes, interestingly orchestrated cocktails, and a full dining experience.

It’s been a long road for Katoi/Takoi, since their food truck and pop-up existence, and through it all they’ve been able to keep and amp up some of our favorite dishes, like their Thai Fried Chicken with coconut milk ranch and sweet chili garlic, their Sticky Rice, and their take on roasted carrots and pad thai. The new Takoi will most likely present a menu that’s half original dishes and half completely new. As always though, Takoi’s food is for sharing, tasting, trying new things, and experiencing flavors that are out of this world.

Diners will notice a tall fence surrounding the Takoi building, which adds outdoor cooking and dining to the Takoi experience. The patio is expected to have a more walk-up casual feel, with a limited menu and maybe less of a wait for seats. For those who visited before the temporary closure, Takoi’s small bar area has been expanded with their shipping container and will seat over 10 additional guests. The interior of the restaurant is very similar to before the fire, with their exposed cinderblock walls, windows overhead with natural lighting, neon accents, and both communal and separate booth seating.

The restaurant still doesn’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait, but they are trying something new, where visitors can purchase tickets ahead of time for a Takoi Experience ($65 per person, plus a $35 beverage pairing option). The chef will cater to your taste buds with whatever Takoi decides to whip up the day of your non-reservation reservation. Those interested can purchase tickets for 2-6 guests by visiting the restaurant’s website.

Takoi is open from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. from Thursday through Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
