TOMMEY WALKER, DETROIT VS EVERYBODY

Tommey Walker, a native Detroiter and the man behind the brand DETROIT VS EVERYBODY, plans to open up his third apparel shop and second location in Eastern Market by August. DETROIT VS EVERYBODY has exploded internationally since the official Detroit debut nearly three years ago and has since gained attention from big names like Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Big Sean, Drake, Nas and more.

Additionally, DETROIT VS EVERYBODY has licensed the mantra to Eminem and his label, Shady Records, for a collaboration under the name “Shady Vs. Everybody.”

The idea for DETROIT VS EVERYBODY came near the tail end of the Kwame Kilpatrick trial when Walker was on a trip to California. As soon as he left the plane, he saw a giant billboard with Eminem on it and Kilpatrick was all over the news on TV. He realized more in that moment than ever that Detroit’s influence around the world is much more than people gave it credit for and he wanted to be part of a positive social change.

“I am a product of the city and I have a different perspective,” said Walker.

Walker started his graphic design dream in middle school and continued his education at Wayne State University and the Art Institute of Novi, while grabbing big freelance deals as well, such as work on the Superbowl XL campaign and work with Def Jam Recordings.

“The spirit of Detroit is all over the world and people keep it negative,” said Walker. “The idea came just when it was time.”

Since the birth of that idea about three years ago, Walker has worked diligently to spread word about Detroit’s rich culture and its fight through his apparel line. Along the way, he grew with team of individuals he calls his friends.

“I’m really grateful for my team and how organically it came together,” said Walker. Two of his head team members are Sean Williams, business manager, and Will Willingham, brand manager.

Walker’s devotion to God, drive to promote the positive in Detroit and desire to change the media focus kept his fire going.

“All my glory goes to god,” he said.

DETROIT VS EVERYBODY is growing as a brand and have developed different lines throughout, including a new line for children, and their EVERYBODY VS line, attacking different causes. The causes shirts read: DETROIT VS CANCER, DETROIT VS NEGATIVITY, EVERYBODY VS INJUSTICE and more.

The women’s line will be expanding this year as well, said Walker.

The new DETROIT VS EVERYBODY location is slated to open in Eastern Market on Russell Street as the brand’s first storefront off-the-street shop, with the first two shops on the third floor of the 400 Monroe building in Greektown.

Building a culture around visitors to Detroit, especially in historic areas, is another one of Walker’s missions.

Walker’s idea is to open locations in historic neighborhoods throughout the city because they’re not going anywhere and neither is he.

“This brand is here forever,” he said.
